Rai Valley Area School

Environmental Education

Rai Valley Area School is a leader in environmental education, having been an official Enviro school since 2002.The enviro schools programme encourages young people to think and act sustainably.

Last year Rai Valley Area School was placed first equal in the first Marlborough School’s Environmental Awards. This was due to the many interesting environmental activities our students take part in such as growing healthy vegetables, regular roadside clean ups, composting of all food scraps, our large native tree nursery and our efforts to maintain a beautiful school environment.

In the Trees for Survival project native seeds and seedlings from our area are raised in our nursery at school and then gifted to local residents for the enhancement of local riverbanks and protected areas.

At school we encourage the practice of reduce, reuse and recycle. This means that waste paper and food scraps are composted and used on our school gardens and that students are encouraged to take lunch wrap home for recycling and reuse.
